NEWBORN SLEEP SUPPORT

For parents seeking more clarity and personalized guidance for newborn's sleep
(0–4 months)

YOU'RE NOT ALONE

If sleep feels overwhelming and confusing right now, you're not alone

Newborn sleep can feel unpredictable and exhausting—especially in the early weeks and months.

You may find yourself wondering:

  • Is this normal?

  • Am I supposed to be doing something differently?

  • Will this ever feel more settled?

  • Why does nothing seem to work the way people say it should?

  • Why does every answer seem to conflict?

  • Am I creating habits that will make sleep harder later?

  • Will my baby ever settle into a more predictable rhythm?

  • How can I tell what my baby actually needs?

  • I’m returning to work—will things really be okay like this?

  • I’m so tired, but I don’t know what to change.

Many parents I work with feel caught between exhaustion and uncertainty—doing their very best while running on very little sleep.

What most families need isn't more information or conflicting advice—they need clear guidance, practical support that works for their family, and reassurance about what truly matters. My goal is to help you approach your baby's unique sleep with greater clarity, confidence, and peace of mind.

Every baby is different. Together, we’ll focus on understanding your baby’s needs and creating a healthy sleep foundation gently and responsively.

FROM SURVIVAL TO STEADINESS

A More Predictable Rhythm Begins

Newborn sleep won't be perfect—and it doesn't need to be. However, as your baby's sleep foundation develops, you'll begin to notice meaningful changes that help your whole family feel more grounded.

Over time, you may begin to experience:

Baby Crib Setup

Calmer Rhythm

A more peaceful flow to your days as you understand your baby’s unique sleep patterns and needs.

Baby Holding Hand

More Confidence

Feel more confident as you know what truly matters for healthy sleep and how to respond with intention.

Newborn With Parents

More Joy & Connection

More moments to bond with and enjoy your baby in this season—not just focus on getting through the day.

There will still be unpredictable moments—that's part of life with a newborn. But instead of feeling carried by the chaos, you'll begin to move through each day with greater confidence, steadiness, peace and connection.

MY APPROACH

A holistic, family-centered approach to newborn sleep

Newborn sleep is never just about sleep. It is shaped by a unique combination of your baby’s development, temperament, feeding, physical comfort, environment, daily rhythms, the dynamics of your family and more. Understanding these factors is key to creating a strong foundation for healthy sleep.

That’s why I don’t use one-size-fits-all solutions. I focus on understanding the full picture of your baby and your family.

1. I look at the whole system, not just sleep
As a certified postpartum doula, lactation counselor, and pediatric sleep consultant, I consider how the many factors affecting your baby and family work together to shape sleep.

2. Your values and intuition guide this journey
You know your baby and your family best. My role is to listen first, then support you with an approach that aligns with your values, comfort level, and daily reality—without rigid rules or conflicting advice.

3. I build understanding, not dependency
My goal is to help you understand the 'why' behind your baby's sleep so you can continue navigating changes with confidence. The goal is lasting confidence, not short-term fixes.

This is the foundation I use for every family I support.

UNDERSTANDING NEWBORN SLEEP

Newborns don't need sleep training—but they thrive with sleep shaping

Newborns are not ready for any form of structured or strict sleep training. Their sleep cycles are immature, their nervous system is still developing, and frequent waking is both biologically normal and necessary.

But that doesn't mean you simply have to wait for sleep to improve on its own.

From the very beginning, there are many small, intentional adjustments that can support healthier sleep patterns without forcing sleep or overriding your baby's needs. When these principles are consistently applied, babies are given the right conditions to naturally develop healthy sleep habits over time.

My approach focuses on removing unnecessary barriers, creating the right conditions for healthy sleep, and helping your baby develop more restful, sustainable sleep patterns—gently, responsively, and in ways that respect their natural development.

This is not sleep training. It is sleep shaping.

Many parents are given advice that sounds reasonable—but isn't always helpful for understanding how newborn sleep really works. Here are four common misconceptions I often help families move beyond.

COMMON MISCONSEPTION #1
"There's nothing I can do until my baby is old enough for sleep training."

While newborns are not developmentally ready for sleep training, there is still a great deal you can do to support healthy sleep from the very beginning.

Small, intentional adjustments to your baby's environment, daily rhythm, and sleep habits can gently encourage better sleep while respecting your baby's developmental needs.

Good sleepers are not formed by sleep training but right sleep conditioning.

COMMON MISCONSEPTION #2
"Frequent waking is normal, so every wake-up is unavoidable."

Newborns need to wake for feeding, and that is essential for healthy growth and development.

However, not every wake-up is caused by hunger. Sleep environment, overtiredness, and other unnecessary disruptions can also contribute to fragmented sleep.

The goal is never to eliminate normal waking—it's to gently reduce unnecessary waking whenever possible.

COMMON MISCONSEPTION #3
"If I respond every time, I'll create bad habits." or "If I don't respond every time, my baby will suffer"

The goal is not to respond less, but to understand more.

When you learn to recognize why your baby is waking or fussing—whether it’s hunger, discomfort, connection, development, or another need—you can respond intentionally rather than feeling like you are constantly guessing. This understanding creates a stronger foundation for healthy sleep and greater rest for the whole family.

COMMON MISCONSEPTION #4
"How do I teach my newborn to sleep through the night?”

“Sleeping through the night” is not something we chase or train into a newborn. Rather, it is something that often develops naturally when a baby reaches the appropriate developmental stage, supported by consistent care, healthy sleep foundations, a well-supported sleep environment, and having their needs appropriately met along the way.

My role is to help you thoughtfully build those foundations together, step by step.

MEET SHINOBU

The story, experience, and heart behind Your Little Hands

Hello! I'm Shinobu — a certifiedcertified postpartum doula, lactation counselor, newborn sleep specialist, and pediatric sleep consultant who has supported families through the newborn stage for years.

My path into this work began with my own experience as a new mother far from my home country—Japan. After giving birth to my first child, I experienced firsthand how overwhelming the postpartum period can feel when you're exhausted, uncertain, and trying to navigate everything on your own. That experience shaped the way I support families today—with empathy, education, practical guidance, and care that honors both the baby and the parents.

I became especially passionate about newborn sleep after witnessing how deeply sleep and daily rhythms can affect the entire family. The earliest weeks and months are a powerful window for building healthy sleep foundations. When families understand their baby’s needs and establish supportive rhythms from the very beginning, they are not simply creating better nights—they are nurturing a foundation that can support their child’s well-being and the family’s overall quality of life for years to come.

What makes my sleep support unique is that it is built on a deep understanding of the whole newborn experience. My background in postpartum care, feeding support, and overnight newborn care allows me to look beyond sleep issues alone and consider the many factors that influence a baby's rest and a family's well-being.

My goal is not simply to help your baby sleep better. It's to help your family feel more rested, confident, and supported as you navigate these early months together.
